Why should I vote yes for the bond in November?

What You Need To Know

Frequently Asked Questions

1 / What will the new library include?
  • Approximately 90,000 square foot, three story building

  • Multiple dedicated meeting and study rooms

  • A maker space and memory lab

  • Dedicated spaces for adults, teens, and children

  • Outdoor space and cafe

2 / Taxes are already high.  Why should I pay more?
  • Troy's capital millage rate has decreased by more than 27% since 2001

  • Troy levied the second lowest city tax rate in Oakland county in 2024

  • Most of the taxes you pay to Troy are collected on behalf of the Troy School District, Oakland County Intermediate School District, and the Michigan Department of Education

3 / Why not just fix the existing building?
  • Just renovating the existing building has been estimated to cost $42 million in 2025 dollars

  • The building will still be only 50,000 square feet, which is half the size needed for a population the size of Troy, per analysis performed by consultant ReThinking Libraries

  • Troy's capital tax funding has declined from $12.7 million in 1999 to $7.3 million (adjusted for inflation) in 2024.  A library renovation would have to compete against every other road, public safety, and quality of life improvement request in the city
